Breast Reduction

Also known as reduction mammoplasty, this is recommended for women experiencing physical discomfort due to large breasts.

Breast reduction can alleviate back, neck and shoulder pain. It can alleviate skin irritation under the breast as well as improve posture and mobility.

This procedure involves reducing breast size by removing excess fat and glandular tissue. Three incisions are made: around the nipple, vertically down the breast and horizontally under the breast following the natural curve of the breast (known as the inframammary fold).

Breast reduction also corrects the position of the nipples and reduces the size of the areolas. Breast reduction procedures usually take 3.5–4.5 hours and require a general anaesthetic.

Regular post-operative consultations will be arranged with Dr Knox to allow him to monitor your healing and progress.

It is important to understand that post-operative recovery can be different for each person, but you can expect the following:

Anticipate a 2 night stay in hospital.

You may have drains for 24hrs. This removes stagnant blood.

Sutures where possible are dissolvable.

Being unable to lift your arms above your head. Button-up clothing is recommended.

Wearing a compression bra for 4-6 weeks. This gives support without hurting incisions.

Unable to drive for 10-14 days

If you have had a nipple reconstruction, you will have a foam dressing sewn to your nipple.

Light activity can be recommended post op

Be prepared to take life very quietly for the first 1-2 weeks.

Heavy lifting & gym can usually recommence 6 weeks later.

Breast tissue is sent for analysis. Results are usually available at your first post-op appointment.

Breast lift

Also known as mastopexy, this procedure is ideal for women who are satisfied with their breast size but are troubled by loss of volume or loss of firmness.

Breast lift also corrects the position of the nipples and involves reducing the size of the areolas if needed. The procedure involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.

Three incisions are made: around the nipple, vertically down the breast and horizontally under the breast following the natural curve of the breast (known as the inframammary fold).

Breast lift procedures usually take 2.5–3 hours and require a general anaesthetic.

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast volume and restore contouring and symmetry.

Breast augmentation can be a solution for women who:

• feel their breasts need more volume

• desire a more balanced breast appearance

• wish to correct breast asymmetry

Dr Knox uses premium MENTOR™ breast implants by Johnson & Johnson.

You can choose from two shapes:

  • Round – Even, semicircular projection. Often recommended for enhancing upper breast fullness.

  • Anatomical (Teardrop) – Highest projection at the lowest part of the implant. Following the natural contour of the breast.

The implants contain cohesive gel, meaning medical grade silicone is used, which provides a more natural appearance than with other implants.

Breast implants have either a smooth or a textured outer coating and Dr Knox will recommend which is better for you.

During your consultation, Dr Knox will use a sizing kit to determine the appropriate size and shape, sometimes testing a range of breast implants to determine the most pleasing aesthetic outcome. He will also discuss placement options– either pectoral muscle.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes 2–3 hours. Incisions are made along the inframammary fold (which is the natural crease beneath the breast) and a pocket is created to position the implant

You can expect to prepare for the following pre-operatively:

Routine blood tests.

Routine ECG.

Ultrasound +/- Mammogram

Communication with hospital and anaesthetist.

Ceasing certain medication.

Compression bra measurement.

Choosing a round-shape breast implant means the base is round and the projection creates an even semi-circle

Choosing a anatomical-shape breast implant means the base is a teardrop and creates a contour more aligned with the natural curve of the breast.

Choosing the size of the breast implant or size range.

Day Stay or overnight in hospital

Unable to drive for 7-10 days

Light activity can be recommenced 1 week post-op.

Be prepared to take life very quietly for the first week.

Heavy lifting & gym can usually recommence 4 weeks later.

You will have swelling. This makes the implant sit slightly higher initially. Once it subsides your implants will drop into position

Breast implant removal

Although many women have breast implants for years without significant issues, surgical removal, with or without replacement, may become medically necessary due to medical concerns, or for personal preference or aesthetic reasons.

Some women may choose to have their implants replaced or have a breast lift as part of the procedure to restore the position of the breast. Others choose to simply have the breast implants removed.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes 1–2 hours. Incisions are made along the inframammary fold (which is the natural crease beneath the breast) to expose the pocket where the implant is in place, then the implants are removed.

Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue, and it can affect one or both breasts.
This condition can be concerning for teenagers and men.

The most common cause of gynaecomastia is changes in metabolism that affect oestrogen production. Oestrogen may have a more prominent role during certain stages of the life of a boy or man:

Newborn stage: Oestrogen from mother is still present in the baby boy.

Puberty: Changes occur in male and female hormones.

Adult men: Oestrogen can slightly increase in production, and certain medications can cause excess glandular tissue.

While boys are in the newborn and puberty phases, a conservative approach is often taken, as it is common for them to grow out of the oestrogen-related issues within a couple of years. For adult men, however, there may need to be an adjustment made to the medication that is causing the gynaecomastia, or a surgical approach may be taken.

In your consultation with Dr Knox, he may require hormonal screening and a breast ultrasound to be taken.

Correction of gynaecomastia procedures usually take 2.5–3 hours and require a general anaesthetic. Incisions are made horizontally under the inframammary fold (which is the natural crease beneath the breast) and the extra glandular and fatty tissue is removed. In some cases, the nipple needs to be corrected as well. Alternatively, liposuction (the removal of fat from the body by suction) may be performed to remove the extra glandular and fatty tissue.

You can expect to prepare for the following pre-operatively:

Routine blood tests.

Routine ECG.

Ultrasound +/- Mammogram

Communication with hospital and anaesthetist.

Ceasing certain medication.

Compression bra measurement.
